It’s Okay for Profiling to Include Race

It should be obvious that we need to do better profiling in a variety of social venues, specifically to prevent us from being easy targets for terrorism. We don’t want profiling to be racial – that should be a given. But that doesn’t mean that profiling can’t include race as one factor among many. Profiling probably SHOULD include race. Just as it should include gender, age, ethnic background, religion, physical appearance, and social customs observed. None of these things taken by themselves can produce a valid profile, but taken together, they may be valuable.

The professional profilers should be allowed to do their job and tell us which factors they need to put attention on and how to weight the priorities. Profiling is really just common sense detective work. Get out of the way and let the detectives work!
