Preamble to the U.S. Constitution

This is a one sentence prelude to the U.S. Constitution designed to introduce the foundational principles and purposes that guided its formation.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

While this preamble does not modify the Constitution in any way, it can be useful in understanding the framework of thought that established the Constitution. Here are the salient points:

  • form a more perfect union
  • establish Justice
  • insure domestic Tranquility
  • provide for the common defence
  • promote the common welfare
  • secure the Blessings of Liberty
