Preserving Liberty

The purpose of government is to preserve liberty. We join with others to create protection against threats to our freedom. By creating an organizational structure that can combine our resources and focus our energy, we are more able to defend ourselves.

As we form government to protect our liberty, we discover that it is necessary to make contributions of our time, effort, and money to support it. And we also decide we are willing to sacrifice a small portion of our liberty in order to preserve the larger part of it.

We need to stay focused on the idea that the basic purpose of government is to preserve our liberty. If we allow ourselves to become confused into thinking the purpose of government is to solve our problems or supply us with what we need, we will end up sacrificing our liberty in order to make it possible for the government to accomplish those goals.
