We’re All Liberals

The original meaning of the term, “liberal” meant to advocate for the liberty of the individual. Most of us believe in that. But we all don’t agree on how we should go about doing that.

In US politics today, the term liberal means one who supports the agenda of the left wing, which has swung solidly toward various forms of socialism. Socialism is a belief in a strong central government that emphasizes the needs and desires of the larger group, often at the cost of individual liberty.

In US politics today, the term “conservative” means one who supports the agenda of the right wing, which attempts to conserve the natural state of liberty and emphasizes the needs and desires of the individual over those of large groups.

When conservatives stay true to their stated belief of limiting government in order to protect individual liberty, they are in fact acting as liberals. When those who use the label liberal, abandon the liberty of the individual for the sake of the group, they are not acting as liberals.
